Fusion welding, while it sounds like futuristic mumbo jumbo, is the world ISCO has lived in since 1975, when we entered the fusion welded thermoplastics world with HDPE. Today, ISCO has the most advanced polypropylene in its arsenal for mechanical HVAC applications and more.
FUSION is the process or result of joining two or more things together to form a single entity. Think about this for a second…two pieces become one. No joints? Correct. Fuse 2,000 feet of pipe and fittings and it all becomes one piece? Correct. It’s monolithic.
The advantages are numerous. 1) Because you are joining the same material, there is no path for leaks. So this truly is a leak-free system. Many systems say they are leak-free, however, with many of those systems there are gaskets, crimps, glue, solvents and soldering. With PP-RCT there is none of that; just heat. Even in tight spaces fusion is possible with electrofusion (more to come in the next issue). 2) The actual fusion area is stronger than the pipe itself.
3) The fusion process is a labor savings, especially as the sizes get larger. For example, 6-inch PP-RCT pipe cut, cleaned, heated, and fused takes less than 10 minutes, plus 12-15 minutes for cool-down time. This is significantly less than traditional welding.
